how to plant american elm tree seeds #927059

Asked March 30, 2026, 11:48 AM EDT

I have a large american elm tree in my yard and i have gathered a bunch of seeds that i would like to plant.  I have searched on the internet and it seems I get various methods and gibberish.  do you have specific instructions for elm tree seeds.  specifically, do i dry them before i put them in the refrigerator?  is it necessary to put them in the refrigerator to simulate winter?  should I keep them moist while in the refrigerator?  I have seen all kinds of methods on line but no real consistent method for planting.  thanks for your help.

According to my resources, Umlus seeds can be stored dry in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until fall, where they can be sown outdoors for winter stratification. You could either direct sow in the ground, or try deep pots.

Some sources indicate that you can try sowing seed right away, and you may even get germination within several weeks, but I would not solely rely on this method. I would try at least two options for a better chance at success.
