Hello,
Unfortunately, you have one of the invasive knotweeds. These can be difficult to eradicate. You should avoid cutting or mowing these as this will encourage it to spread. You will be unable to dig these up as the roots are incredibly deep.
This article discusses the various types of knotweeds that are here in Michigan and treatment options.
You may wish to reach out to your local CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area). Each county in MI is covered by a group. Some of them may offer contracting services where they can have someone come out and treat the knotweed for you.
These species have evolved to be one of the first plants to arrive on land where a volcano has recently erupted. They set their roots deep into the lava rock and push their way up thru it, breaking it apart and creating an environment where other plants can then move in. This plant can come up thru asphalt driveways and building foundations.
