Kentucky coffee tree, trimming needed? #935384

Asked June 13, 2026, 5:27 PM EDT

We planted this coffee tree last fall after our neighborhood tree sale. Do we need to trim it so it has one primary leader? It had one that looked to be intended as the leader but there is also another branch competing to be leader.

Thanks for the question.

Before dealing with the pruning, there are two important things that should be done NOW to enhance things for your tree:

1). For this summer (2026) remove the white collar around the tree. With it being in place, excessive humidity can build up between it and the trunk. This could cause the bark to crack and/or promote fungal growth on the tree. Reinstall it late this fall (2026) for winter rabbit/vole protection if needed. Then remove or loosen it again in spring 2027. At the following site, scroll down to the paragraph beginning with, “Tree wrap or fencing prevents animals….”:

2). The mulch that surrounds the tree seems to be in direct contact with the trunk. This needs to be corrected so that the immediate area around the trunk stays dry. Otherwise, rotting could occur at the tree’s base. Pull the mulch away from the trunk out to about six inches. Try to locate the root flare and expose it if it is buried. When done, the mulch should look like a broad, flat donut, not a mound against the trunk. See:

With respect to pruning, this tree has been in its current location for less than a year. Excessive pruning at this (mid-June 2026) should be avoided. Deciding upon a leader can wait until 2027. For 2026, only do slight reduction cuts on competing upright shoots if needed. Avoid removing any large live branches. I am attaching a picture showing where 2026 pruning could be made.

Good luck. Get back to us with any questions. Thanks for using our forum.
