damaged hosta leaves #935688

Asked June 16, 2026, 9:55 AM EDT

my hostas came up beautifully but about a month they started to have brown leaves, yellow leaves, and curling edges. Should I cut them back or treat them with something?

Expert Response

Looks like they are in too much sun - sun scorch.  Have they been at this location for awhile?  Nothing you can put on them will help.  If you move them to a shadier location, the damaged leaves won't change, but new leaves will emerge undamaged and stay that way.

Hope this helps. Thanks for contacting Ask Extension

Thanks, Taffy
they were shaded by a tree that was removed a couple of years ago. they did ok last year,  but maybe the sun plus high temps did them in. I will move them.
Do you have any suggestions for perennial native plants that might do better in that sunny sourhern exposure spot and take up space like a hosta?
Appreciate any suggestions
thank you

Here is UME's site for native plants.  It includes all types of plants - shrubs, trees, perennials, etc.  You can click on the type you are looking for.  For such a large area, I would go with some shrubs as well as perennials.
