Top Dressing for Coral Bells #935799

Asked June 17, 2026, 3:08 AM EDT

I just planted some coral bells. What is the best material to use as mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture in summer heat and protect from winter cold? Can I use shredded coconut coir? I know I shouldn’t use peat moss because of the acidity that would leach out. If you suggest compost, do you have any specific recommendations as to type? Thanks!

Thank you for reaching out. A great mulch is shredded bark. I'm not sure about the coconut coir. I've never tried it. It might work. But I know that the mulch bark and even grass depending on where you're putting it -those are good. Don't put it right up next to the stems of the plant. Leave a couple inches all the way around. That should be good for winter as well as now to help retain moisture.  When December rolls around, you can cover the area with the mulch.  Remove it in the spring when temps.  Don't use mulch taken from a city mulch pile.  It could contain things you don't want.

I personally don't mulch my coral bells for winter.  I hope this helps!
