Box Elder Bugs #946330

Asked October 01, 2026, 10:44 PM EDT

I have a female box elder covered with box elder bugs. For the past week I have been going out late afternoon and vacuuming them off the tree with a shop vac. It gives me great pleasure knowing I am putting a small dent in the number of bugs getting into houses this year and even fewer mating next year. Now I don't know how to kill the ones that are in the shop vac. They seem to be staying inside the shop vac - for now. I am keeping it outside on the porch and my thoughts are they will stay inside because it is warm and they will huddle together. I will want to empty the vac at some time and am wondering how to kill the bugs! Will they die if they don't have food to suck on? Will they freeze to death? Should I put them in paper bags and throw them into a fire? Should I put something in the vac that will dry them out? I would appreciate any suggesstions you can share. Thank you

Expert Response

Good Morning,

Thanks for your question.

You could dump your shop vac into a pail of soapy water. This would kill the bugs.

Here is a link all about boxelder bugs: https://extension.umn.edu/garden-and-home/home-maintenance/household-insects/boxelder-bugs

The above link also discusses how to deal with them indoors and out.

Good Luck!
